Steps to Get on a Project

There are several ways to get on a project:

  • Start a new Hatch (Regular) or McIntire-Stennis Project
  • Start a new Animal Health Project
  • Start a new Hatch (Multistate) Project
  • Initiate a USDA grant Project
  • Join an existing Hatch (Regular) or McIntire-Stennis Project
  • Join an existing Hatch Multistate Research Project

Contact aes_research@iastate.edu with questions or for more information

Start a new Hatch (Regular) or McIntire-Stennis Project:

  1. Develop a proposal following the prescribed outline; email it to aes_research@iastate.edu in the Research Programs Office
  2. Research Program Office (aes_research@iastate.edu) facilitates a peer review
  3. Review comments are returned to the investigator
  4. Proposal revision may be required
  5. Submit final proposal to aes_research@iastate.edu in the Research Programs Office
  6. Submit a signed hard copy or scanned image of page 1 of the proposal, complete with investigator and department chair signatures
  7. Submit a copy of any needed approvals for research on human subjects and/or vertebrate animals to aes_research@iastate.edu in the Research Programs Office
  8. Research Programs Office conducts final review and approval of the proposal
  9. An Experiment Station project number is assigned
  10. Complete an initiation form online via REEport. You may use this TEMPLATE_REEport project initiation form.docx, which includes instructions, to develop your project initiation and then copy and paste the information into the online form. You may also need the NIFA Classification Manual to complete the initiation form. For more information about the initiation process, see the "Project Initiation" under the "REEport" tab at the top of this website page.
  11. Once you have completed the initiation form online, click "submit" for review by Research Programs Office
  12. Once the completed initiation form is reviewed and approved by the Research Programs Office, the project proposal and project initiation are submitted to USDA for their review and approval

Start a new Animal Health Project:

  1. Response to a Department of Animal Science call for pre-proposals
  2. Selected for proposal development
  3. Follow steps above under Start a new or revise an existing Hatch (Regular) or McIntire-Stennis Project

Start a new Hatch (Multistate) Project:

  1. Respond to a call for participation in a Multistate Research Project being developed or revised by submitted a completed Appendix E to aes_research@iastate.edu in the Research Programs Office
    • Committee proposal is reviewed by the appropriate regional Experiment Station directors, then by USDA
  2. Upon committee approval, submit Project Initiation online via REEport
  3. Submit a copy of any needed approvals for research on human subjects and/or vertebrate animals to aes_research@iastate.edu in the Research Programs Office
    • Experiment Station conducts final review and approval
    • If a new project, an Experiment Station project number is assigned
    • Project Initiation is submitted to USDA for further review and approval

Initiate a USDA grant Project:

  1. USDA National Program Leader notifies you that your pre-proposal is being awarded and that completing a project initiation in REEport is required.
  2. Submit Project Initiation on-line via REEport
    • Experiment Station conducts final review and approval
    • Experiment Station project number is assigned
    • Project Initiation is submitted to USDA for further review and approval

Join an existing Hatch (Regular) or McIntire-Stennis Project:

  1. Some departments have group, departmental umbrella projects. Visit with your department chair to see if this is an option. Otherwise, it may be possible to join with other faculty on an appropriate project. The department chair and all current investigators on the project must approve.
  2. Department chair sends a request to aes_research@iastate.edu in the Research Programs Office.
  3. Experiment Station approves the request; Cathy Good/aes_research@iastate.edu submits the change to the USDA-CRIS office.

Join an existing Hatch Multistate Research Project:

  1. Review the Multistate Research Committees in NIMSS
  2. Identify a committee of interest and to which your work contributes. Review the committee membership
    • If there are no committee members from Iowa State, then submit a completed Appendix E to  aes_research@iastate.edu in the Research Programs Office with a request to join the committee as the official Iowa State representative
    • If Iowa State is already represented, then you can join the committee as an additional Iowa participant. You will need to contact the current representative to coordinate committee and project reporting requirements. Submit a completed Appendix E to aes_research@iastate.edu in the Research Programs Office with a request to join the committee as an Iowa participant
  3. Experiment Station may contact the department chair for representation recommendations
  4. Upon Experiment Station approval, aes_research@iastate.edu submits the Appendix E information into NIMSS to add a new committee member, and submits project modification information in REEport
